I interviewed Jon, a 23 year old new media designer and web developer. He only buys things he plans to keep for a long time.
Inspiration
Cityscapes, slender silhouettes, and durable canvas construction.
This bag is for city dwellers with a fashion sense who want to get stuff done.
Market Positioning
Metro Bag should fit well into an urban environment while taking cues from more rugged bags. The target consumer spends about $130 on a backpack.
Bag Contents
I discovered that chargers, laptops, tablets, water bottles, pens, notebooks, headphones, and thumb drives were the most common items carried by the target market.
Paper Prototype #1
My first paper sample focused on developing the overall shape and size of the bag. This sample turned out a bit too tall and narrow. However, the roll top design with rectangular silhouette was a good starting point.
Paper Prototype #2
In this paper sample, I shortened the height and added contours to the panels. The shape became more defined and less boxy. I also started thinking about where top stitching might be added. At this point it was time to move on to developing muslin samples.
Fabric Prototype #1
My first muslin sample explored top stitching and an exterior water bottle pocket. Working in fabric added a whole new dimension compared to the paper. This gave me the basis for narrowing down the final form and adding more details.
Fabric Prototype #2
At this point, the final form was nailed down. I started trying different webbing thicknesses and materials along with their connection points. I also experimented with more top stitching options and a second exterior pocket for easy access to small items.
Fabric Prototype #3
Final details were the focus of this last muslin sample. After critical analysis and thoroughly reviewing my research, I found that the top stitching along the entire bag was superfluous. Removing the top stitching also removed steps in the production process, ultimately making it easier and cheaper to produce.
